5. Dororo

1

Synopsis :

Review :

My childhood favorite anime is Astro Boy (2003), the ending of Astro Boy is one of my most favorite ending back then because it was very impactful. When I knew Astro Boy is the first anime that was made in history and it’s also written by Tezuka Osamu, I’m really surprised. I have a feeling Astro Boy is made by a great writer, but I don’t know if it was made by the most legendary mangaka. Dororo is also made by Tezuka Osamu, that’s the only information I need to watch Dororo. Honestly, I don’t really like a story about classic historical theme, but when I know it was made by Tezuka Osamu, I just can’t ignore it.

Dororo’s story starts with a strong dark background story and that make me interested to keep going on. The development of Hyakkimaru’s adventure is interesting to follow, losing all of his sense, he still try to find what he lost on the past. One thing that made the story comfortable to follow is the existence of Dororo, Hyakkimaru’s funny partner. Dororo (series) has a lot of amazing and impactful side story, the best example is Hyakkimaru and Dororo’s past, along with Mio’s encounters. Tezuka Productions and MAPPA just made one of their best adaptation with Dororo, it’s close to be the best adaptation this season behind Mob Psycho.

Overall the first cour left a good impression for me, and I decide to continue. Tezuka Osamu made a story in 1960-ish that can compete with the story in 21st century. He made this story without many references because he’s the references itself. The godfather of manga indeed.

Score :

  • Story : 8/10
  • Animation : 8/10
  • Character : 7/10
  • Enjoyment : 8/10
  • Overall : 7.75/10

Short-guide (15+) :

  • If you like classic historical theme (Japan’s atmosphere), this is for you
  • If you like Samurai-theme, this is for you
  • Similar anime : Golden Kamuy

4. Kaguya-sama: Love is War

1

Synopsis :

https://myanimelist.net/anime/37999/Kaguya-sama_wa_Kokurasetai__Tensai-tachi_no_Renai_Zunousen

Review :

Kaguya-sama creates a new approach of romance-comedy series, a love story with psywar, and the story centered with two smart main characters. At first sight, Miyuki and Kaguya looks like some fools to think the most useless thing, but it’s all hands down because of their pride as a number one and number two student on the school. They’re basically the same creatures, in love with each other but doesn’t want to ask the other out, and wanted to be asked out instead. The concept of story starts from there, or I should say the battlefield starts from there.

The most powerful weapon Kaguya-sama has is their characters. Each of characters has their own strong unique personality and it made this series has more depth than usual romance-comedy series. The supporting cast like Fujiwara, Ishigami and Hayasaka is also equally important as Miyuki and Kaguya and that’s why the writer can make a lot of interesting interaction between all of his characters. Kaguya-sama character’s line-up is the best for this season. The unique side from Kaguya-sama is their character inner talks when they’re on the battle of psywar, and that’s what make it very funny and interesting to watch.

Kaguya-sama starts quite weak because of the narrator talks too much and it make the series somehow annoying at first, but it got better later when we already know the uniqueness of each characters. Funniest anime this season by far.

Score :

  • Story : 7/10
  • Animation : 8/10
  • Character : 9/10
  • Enjoyment : 8/10
  • Overall : 8/10

Short-guide (15+) :

  • If you like romance comedy, this is for you
  • If you like light psywar story, this is for you
  • Similar anime : Karakai Jouzu no Takagi-san

3. Yakusoku no Neverland

1

Synopsis :

https://myanimelist.net/anime/37779/Yakusoku_no_Neverland

Review :

Yakusoku no Neverland (TPN) is the closest thing to be called as the next Death Note, it’s been a while since Shonen-JUMP got a great mystery title. The easiest way to explain it is just imagine you got a story of Shingeki no Kyojin’s thrill and Death Note’s psywar, but just see it from similarity-aspect, because TPN is still not at their level, yet.

As a manga reader, the impact I got from watching this anime is not as impactful as the others, but still, my adrenaline went out when the thrill did some greatness at the end of series. Something that amazed me about TPN is the idea of story, it was born to be at the top. My first impression with TPN’s adaptation is very good because TPN’s first episode is definitely the best this season, perfectly desribed this series as a whole. The story got weaker after the first episode, the anime also skipped some amazing panels from the manga, and the thrill won’t get as good until the end of the story. I don’t feel the same level of excitement when the first time I read the manga, but I don’t think CloverWorks did a bad job either. How the story was directed got much better towards to the end of the series, if only they can keep this kind of quality from the start, it will be amazing.

Overall it’s a great series, but definitely not a banger. I hope CloverWorks step up their game for second season in 2020 because I think Yakusoku no Neverland is the series that has the most potential around right now. Now it’s all depends on them.

Score :

  • Story : 8/10
  • Animation : 8/10
  • Character : 8/10
  • Enjoyment : 8/10
  • Overall : 8/10

Short-guide (15+) :

  • If you like mystery, this is for you
  • If you like psywar-theme, this is for you
  • Similar anime : Death Note, Made in Abyss

2. Mob Psycho 100 2nd Season

2

Synopsis :

https://myanimelist.net/anime/37510/Mob_Psycho_100_II

Review :

Something that I really love about Mob Psycho 100 is the uniqueness of psychological takes from the main character’s perspective, not even most of slice of life series can did this as good as Mob Psycho. Moving from spectacular first season, Bones did it again with banger for this season, they adapt it again with their usual spectacular way. Their consistencies is genuine, you can’t help but admit Bones is the best studio around right now. My Hero Academia and Mob Psycho 100 really take Bones Studio to the new level.

If the first season is mainly about Mob’s power, this season takes the story to more personal level, and it’s about Mob and Reigen’s character developments.  The most standout story in Mob Psycho this season for me is the relationship between Mob and Reigen. When ONE did a story about life, I can’t help but get excited. I’m probably one of the few fans who adore ONE’s story about life more than his action-fighting story. That being said, the fight scenes in Mob Psycho can’t be ignored, Bones just made a history with Mob Psycho’s animation. Big praise to the director who can direct the animators in such an artistic way. Keiji Mogami arc is the most powerful arc for this season, it has the biggest Mob’s character development and one of the most beautiful fight scenes at the same time.

The adaptation is perfect as far as I’m concerned, one of the best adaptation I’ve seen in recent years. The only weak point with Mob Psycho for me is the story. The last arc ‘World Domination’ is pretty cliche, and it was predictable, also there’s some boring episodes in the middle of the series. With Mob Psycho, I will take the first season story and the second season adaptation then it would be a perfect series.

Score :

  • Story : 7/10
  • Animation : 10/10
  • Character : 8/10
  • Enjoyment : 8/10
  • Overall : 8.25/10

Short-guide (15+) :

  • If you like shonen-action genre, this is for you
  • If you like overpowered main character, this is for you
  • If you’re a fan of One Punch Man, this is for you
  • Similar anime : One Punch Man, Saiki Kusuo no Psi-nan

1. Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru [2nd Cour]

Synopsis :

https://myanimelist.net/anime/37965/Kaze_ga_Tsuyoku_Fuiteiru

Review :

After a long build-up in the first cour, I’m expecting a very good conclusion in the second cour. This series successfully surpassed my expectations, but not in the way I expected. I always believe a sport anime must have an exciting sport element to be a great series, an exciting competitive competition to be exact, but Kaze ga Tsuyoku Fuiteiru (Kazetsuyou) proves me wrong. There’s no an actual rival, there’s no neck and neck race, there’s no last minute winners, and there’s no miracle at the race, but the story remained brilliant despite lacking of popular sports anime element. That’s an amazing achievement if you ask me. Kazetsuyou left a mark as a legend for making a new dimension in sport anime series.

In 2nd cour, Kazetsuyou still remains at their own game, which is to focus on character’s development, and the result proved it did the right thing. The main strengh of Kazetsuyou is the family relationship in their team. If I was told the story took a place in real life, I won’t be surprised because the interaction and relationship between each character is very genuine. Hands down the most realistic sport I’ve ever watched.

I’ve said this in my first cour review before but I want to say it again. How Haiji managed to convice his friend from zero interest with running and now they’re with him until death is just amazing. There’s an actual “logical” process to make them took interest with running, it takes a lot of times as it should, but the way the story did it realistically made the series even more likeable. The characters that has the most noticeable development are Kakeru and Prince. Kakeru starts as an antisocial who never give a fuck about running team again but now he’s with the team to the death. And Prince, who starts as a freak otaku and never working out before managed to get an important influence on the national tournament. The process of these development symbolize as Kazetsuyou’s identity.

I.G. Production just made an unheard sport story to be one of the best sport anime around, they did a great job with the adaptation. More like, they never did a bad job with sport anime adaptation.

Score :

  • Story : 8/10
  • Animation : 8/10
  • Character : 8/10
  • Enjoyment : 9/10
  • Overall : 8.25/10

Short-guide (15+) :

  • If you like sports, this is for you
  • If you only like slice of life, this is also watchable for you
  • Similar anime : Ballroom e Youkoso, Yowamushi Pedal

Note :

  • It’s a close race between Kazetsuyou and Mob Psycho for the first place to be honest, but at the end Kazetsuyou has a better story and more impactful ending even though Mob Psycho has a better adaptation.
  • Despite what I said about TPN above, I enjoyed TPN the most this season because I really like the concept of story (it’s also one of my most favorite manga) along with Kaguya-sama. Both got better at the second half of the season, but overall still can’t beat Kazetsuyou and Mob Psycho objectively.
