5. Beastars

Weird flex anime, but it’s turned out to be really great. If Beastars’s score is below 7.5 in MyAnimeList, I won’t bother to watch it. Seriously, I never interested with interaction between non-human even in a fiction story. But no matter what people said, I always believe MAL’s score so I give it a try.

And the result is, once again I’m glad I believe in MAL’s score. Beastars turned out to be a great non-mainstream anime. If you love to learn about new perspectives, Beastars is a delicious dish for your free time. Also, there’s romance seasoning that make the story more interesting. Interactions between each character is unique and will give you new knowledge about perspective.

4. Mob Psychoo 2nd Season

Something that I really love about Mob Psycho 100 is the uniqueness of psychological takes from the main character’s perspective, not even most of slice of life series can did this as good as Mob Psycho. Moving from spectacular first season, Bones did it again with banger for this season, they adapt it again with their usual spectacular way. Their consistencies is genuine, you can’t help but admit Bones is the best studio around right now. My Hero Academia and Mob Psycho 100 really take Bones Studio to the new level.

If the first season is mainly about Mob’s power, this season takes the story to more personal level, and it’s about Mob and Reigen’s character developments.  The most standout story in Mob Psycho this season for me is the relationship between Mob and Reigen. When ONE did a story about life, I can’t help but get excited. I’m probably one of the few fans who adore ONE’s story about life more than his action-fighting story. That being said, the fight scenes in Mob Psycho can’t be ignored, Bones just made a history with Mob Psycho’s animation. Big praise to the director who can direct the animators in such an artistic way. Keiji Mogami arc is the most powerful arc for this season, it has the biggest Mob’s character development and one of the most beautiful fight scenes at the same time. The big downside in this arc is the story, I just can’t hooked with this arc’s story even though the animation part is world class.

The adaptation is perfect as far as I’m concerned, one of the best adaptation I’ve seen in recent years. The only weak point with Mob Psycho this season for me is the story. The last arc ‘World Domination’ is pretty cliche, and it was predictable, also there’s some boring episodes in the middle of the series. With Mob Psycho, I will take the first season story and the second season adaptation, then it would be perfect.

3. Dr. Stone

Along with Yakusoku no Neverland, Dr. Stone’s premises is one of the most unique, original, and interesting in Shonen JUMP in the last decade for me. The writer is Riichiro Inagaki, the story-writer of Eyeshield 21, which also I’m a big fan of. Even with a non-mainstream genre in Shonen JUMP, Dr Stone feels very ‘shonen’ because of Inagaki’s writing, and that’s a quite amazing.

I’m a huge fan of Eyeshield 21’s Hiruma, and I’ve always think how great it is if there’s a main character in anime/manga like Hiruma. Then, there’s Senku, my wish is granted just like that, I bet Inagaki-sensei also has a feeling it would be great if he has main-character like Hiruma Yoichi. Anyway, I’m very thankful for Senku, my wish from middle-school days is finally here.

Enough of that, aside from great premises and main character, the story is also excecuted very well. There will be some boring episode for people who doesn’t like science, but, I’m pretty sure the relationship between each character in Dr. Stone will make you forget about that. Also, the flashback story of Dr. Stone is better than I expect, I can feel Shingeki no Kyojin’s vibe at that time, it’s really amazing.

2. Vinland Saga

Watching Vinland Saga feels like watching the early of Game of Thrones. War, politics, and betrayal, you got all of them. There’s nothing I can say anymore about Vinland Saga, there’s already praises from everywhere, and I must say this series deserves those praises. If you’re looking for some seinen anime, Vinland Saga is a good start.

One thing I want really to mention is the latest episode, it’s fucking insane. It’s like the peak of Game of Thrones which oftenly called as the greatest TV-series of all time back then before that disaster last season. The plot twist, atmosphere, and everything in that episode is very amazing. Before this episode, my candidate for episode of the year are Kimetsu no Yaiba – 19th episode, and Shingeki no Kyojin S3 – 17th episode. But I must say, Vinland Saga’s latest episode surpassed both of them. Now you can imagine how good that episode is.

1. Shingeki no Kyojin 3rd Season Part 2

I don’t know anymore what to say about Shingeki no Kyojin, I don’t remember if there’s an anime who can make me goosebump endlessly only by revealing one of their story’s secret. What surprised me the most is the consistency, it’s mad how Isayama can not only keep the quality of the story, but always made it better and better. It’s really unbelievable at this point. Shingeki no Kyojin successfully made me speechless like a child once again.

I’ve always said the best shonen anime of all time is Hunter x Hunter (2011), and this is the first time I’ve some doubt about that statement. For me, SnK is already on the same level with Hunter x Hunter to be the all time greats shonen anime series, and potentially can surpass it.

This season is the peak of Shingeki no Kyojin’s story, it has the most important point from the storyline. Finally, we get to know the story behind Titan’s history, and Grisha’s (Eren’s father) past. I don’t want to spoil anything, but it still amazed me how can one sentence line from each episode (especially every last moment of episode) always make me goosebump like a child who saw Goku’s Super Saiyan for the first time. About the animation, I think it’s not Wit’s best work this time, even the first part is much better. Anyway, the story will make you forget about animation and stuff like that, so it’s not really a problem.

Anime(s) of the Decade (2010 – 2019)

10. Steins; Gate – 2011

Steins;Gate is the best-executed time travel story that I’ve ever watched, it’s no surprise that this anime constantly called as the best Sci-Fi anime by many anime fans.

Characters, the reason why a complicated background story like Steins; Gate is still fun to watch, and it makes the story easier to understand. But that doesn’t mean it will be a full of happiness trip either, Steins; Gate will offer you a phenomenal thrill experience toward to the conclusion of the story.

9. Cross Game – 2010

I never dislike Adachi Mitsuru’s works, not even once. I watched most of all his works and I like them all. But among all of them, even though Touch is his most popular work, for me Cross Game is the perfection of all of his work.

Facial expression, and funny conversation are Adachi Mitsuru’s main weapon, and it was used at their best in Cross Game. Cross Game’s theme story is plain and simple, but with Adachi’s touch, it becomes great and very comfortable to watch. The easiest anime to binge-watch for me, it’s over before you realized it. Cross Game is that good.

8. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood – 2010

The obvious one, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is constantly called as the greatest anime of all time along with Hunter x Hunter (as far as I know), so it’s not really a surprise, isn’t it?

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is a series that you can easily call it as a masterpiece, because it has no real weakness. I’m completely agree with that, but having no real weakness doesn’t mean it can automatically become the best, at least for me. Lack of big impacts is the reason why it’s hard for me to put FMAB as the best, but that doesn’t mean I don’t rate FMAB at all. FMAB will always be a strong contender for any anime-rank-category because how amazing the adventures of the story is. Ed and Al’s story still remains as one of the best adventure anime story even after 10 years.

7. Uchuu Kyoudai – 2012

This might be the most surprising for most people. It’s more like it will surprise you if you haven’t watched Uchuu Kyoudai. Uchuu Kyoudai is one of the best slice of life anime out there, you can learn so much things here just by watching it. I have to respect the mangaka’s hardwork for the details he gave for this manga. It will give you a better insight about NASA and astronouts stuff. You don’t have to like astronout or space to watch Uchuu Kyoudai, but instead, Uchuu Kyoudai will make you love astronout and space before you realized it.

One of the most important thing I have to mention is the main character, Nanba Mutta. You will have a happy and amazing adventure while watching this because of him. You will never get bored, you will learn a lot, and you will be entertained. Astronout seems like an old and classic theme to pick, but with Mutta, everything becomes much better.

6. Bakuman – 2010

Bakuman symbolized as my whole love for anime and manga, it has the excitement of shonen, and beautiful drama romance story.

It doesn’t have amazing fights and it also doesn’t have an exciting match that sports series has, yet for me it’s the most exciting anime I’ve ever watched. The way they work toward their dreams is the one who pulled out my adrenaline every single week. I still remember when I want to go back to home from school as fast as possible just to watch Bakuman, and never even once it dissapoints me.

I don’t remember if there’s a bad episode in Bakuman, and that’s something special. I always adore consistency more than anything, people tends to ignore this, but for me this is the most important thing to gained the status of greatness.

5. Haikyuu! (S3) – 2016

Haikyuu (S3) is an ideal role-model for any studio if they want to make a highest quality sport anime. This season only contains one match, but it never feels dragged out. It has all the excitements, great animation, exciting background music, and top characters development. As a big fan of sport anime, I can’t ask for better adaptation. Haikyuu (S3) is the best sport anime adaptation as far as I’m concerned.

Something that amazed me is the main highlight from this season is not from the main character, it’s from support character, Tsukishima Kei. It was an unforgetable moment. That’s one of the strongest point of Haikyuu, every character can have their own amazing moments, it doesn’t have to depend on the main characters to have an amazing story / arc. And, that’s also the reason why Haikyuu is the one of the most loved sport-series out there.

4. Shingeki no Kyojin (S3) – 2019

The only reason why I’m not including Shingeki no Kyojin (S3) in top three is their animation. If they can fuse the animation of first season and the story of third season, then I will have a very hard time to choose anime of the decade.

I don’t know anymore what to say about this series, I don’t remember if there’s an anime who can make me goosebump endlessly only by revealing one of their story’s secret. What surprised me the most is the consistency, it’s mad how Isayama can not only keep the greatness of the story, but always make it better and better. It’s really unbelievable at this point. Shingeki no Kyojin successfully made me speechless like a child once again.

I’ve always thought the best shonen anime of all time is Hunter x Hunter (2011), and this is the first time I’ve some doubt about that statement. For me, SnK is already on the same level with Hunter x Hunter to be the all time greats shonen anime series, and potentially can surpass it.

3. 3-gatsu no Lion (S2) – 2017

3-gatsu no Lion is one of a few anime that I can easily call it as a masterpiece. Moving from an outstanding performance in first season, 3-gatsu no Lion managed to reach higher milestone with their second season. While the the story is mainly about Rei and Shogi in the first season, now we got to see amazing support character’s development here.

The main attention in this season is Kawamoto Hina, she got his own arc which also happened as the best arc from the entire story for so many reasons. This arc is about Hina becomes a target of bullying. The reasoning behind it and how the conflict is solved, the writer did it with the most realistic way. The story is full of burst emotions, bullying looks like a simple problem if we saw it from bigger picture but the writer present the story beatifully, and the details are amazing. It’s very hard to find any weakness in 3-gatsu no Lion, especially their second season. Everything feels flawless.

2. Gintama – 2015

It has been a long road for Gintama. Personally, I think it’s hard to start watching Gintama. You need to start from an old animation quality in this modern animation era. As a whole, Gintama anime has a lot of weakness, starts from filler, bad animation, and weird background story, but when you’re already hooked with the story, you will understand why this series is hugely loved by their fans. Gintama is something that maybe only comes once in our lifetime. We probably won’t find an anime like this again in our life. It’s like you can become a friend with an anime, watching Gintama is a very unique experience.

Gintama (2015) is the peak of Gintama, Shogun’s Assasination and Farewell Shinsengumi arcs are the biggest turning point of the story. This season of Gintama is a different beast, it gives you everything you need from a highest quality anime series. You get a ton of fun moments, thrill moments, emotional moments, amazing battles, and much more. There’s a reason why at some point it passed Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood as the highest score anime series in MyAnimeList.

1. Hunter x Hunter – 2011

This decade is the best ever decade for anime (at least for me), that means the number one anime on this decade, is also the best anime of all time. And here we are, the best anime of all time for me is Hunter x Hunter (2011). When it comes to story-quality, animation, and consistency, I don’t think there’s any other anime out there that can topped Hunter x Hunter.

Everything about Hunter x Hunter felt so excellent from the start until the end. Mad House did their best ever work with this remake of Hunter x Hunter. Chimera Ant and Phantom Troupe arc are the biggest reason why Hunter x Hunter is often hailed as not only the best anime of the decade but also the greatest anime of all time.

  • Little Busters: Refrain – 2013
